Which household chemicals should never be mixed?
Medication safety isn't the only kind of "what's safe together." Some everyday cleaning products become dangerous when combined. Here are the big ones to never mix.
Never mix these
- Bleach + ammonia → releases toxic chloramine gas.
- Bleach + acids (vinegar, some toilet-bowl or rust removers) → releases toxic chlorine gas.
- Bleach + rubbing alcohol → can form chloroform and other harmful compounds.
- Different drain cleaners together → violent, dangerous reactions.
Also be careful: many "all-purpose" and glass cleaners contain ammonia, and many descalers contain acids — so mixing cleaners without reading labels can accidentally combine these.
Warning signs of exposure
Coughing, burning eyes/nose/throat, chest tightness, or trouble breathing after using cleaners. Get to fresh air right away.

Safer habits
- Use one product at a time; rinse surfaces between products.
